Wind advisory issued for area

If you’re headed off to Kansas City today to watch the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament, hang on tight to your tickets — a blustery day is expected, with strong winds gusting up to 50 mph.

“It will be a very windy afternoon,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory through 6 p.m. for most of Kansas, including Douglas, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Jefferson and Johnson counties.

Highest winds will occur between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., Schack said. Drivers with high profile vehicles should be extra cautious on the highways during that time, she said.

At 12:30 p.m., the temperature in downtown Lawrence was 57, with westerly winds 20-36 mph.

Today’s high will be 58, with steady northwest winds 25-35 and gusts 45 to 50 mph, she said. Lawrence will get a fair amount of sunshine with some clouds, she said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to 29 by early Friday morning, she said.

The winds will still be around on Friday, but not as strong, Schack said. Northwest winds will be 15-20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph. The temperature will climb to a high of 51 by Friday afternoon, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 30, with the high reaching 59 under partly cloudy skies. A cold front will move in Saturday night, she said.
