Voting rights
To the editor:
I want to thank the 15 percent of the voters of Lawrence who took advantage of their “right” to vote on March 1.
A special thanks to the 92-year-old lady who told me Sunday that she had sent her ballot in to the courthouse.
For the other 85 percent — I recommend you find a copy of the poem “The Present Crisis” written by James Russell Lowell in 1845.
Note especially the eighth stanza, beginning, “They have rights who dare maintain them; we are traitors to our sires.”
I’m convinced that James Russell Lowell voted in the election of 1860 that sent Abraham Lincoln to the White House.
Dorothy Stumbo,
Lawrence
