Topeka ? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius today criticized Republican attempts to fund public schools with current resources, saying it was fiscally irresponsible and could hurt other areas, such as higher education.

“There are some proposals on the table that would seek to take higher education funding and fund K through 12. That doesn’t do much good,” Sebelius said in a brief speech to leadership groups from Johnson County.

On Monday, the House Appropriations Committee recommended removal of about $10 million from the higher education budget, with Republicans saying they needed to start putting aside funds for public schools. The committee said it would re-visit the higher educaiton funding issue when the veto session starts April 27.

Sebelius says she wants the Legislature to approve a multi-year funding proposal for schools “that has stable funding into the future.”

“To take one-time money and put it into schools this year helps us run into a wall a lot faster next year. It’s kind of like paying your mortgage with a credit card,” she said.
