Grieb bows out of commission race

George Grieb, the sixth place finisher in last week’s Lawrence City Commission primary, has ended his campaign for one of three seats on the commission, he announced today.

Grieb, who was one of the top money raisers in the race, said after analyzing his sixth place finish in the primary he decided he should drop out.

“The other candidates who are in the race that best exemplify how I feel are in a better position to move my ideas and my agenda forward than I am, so that’s what I’m going to let them do,” said Grieb, owner of Lawrence-based Lynn Electric.

Grieb said he would not offer a formal endorsement of any of the remaining candidates, but he said people likely could guess who he supports.

“Anybody who knows anything about the election knows where my allegiances are,” Grieb said.

On the campaign trail, Grieb had often taken positions that ran counter to the two candidates who are supported by the Progressive Lawrence Campaign, incumbent David Schauner and Jim Carpenter.

With Grieb’s exit, Schauner, Carpenter, incumbent Sue Hack, Mike Amyx and Tom Bracciano remain in the race. Voters will determine the three winners at the April 5 election.
