Stereotypes

To the editor:

Having lived in Kansas for less than two years, I am still amazed at the community involvement in the city of Lawrence. I can’t help but comment on the captioned picture in Saturday’s paper “An arresting demonstration.”

Was it necessary to have the “bad guy” wear a long blond wig? It would be nice if all the “bad guys” had long blond hair, but some of them look just like the two officers giving the demonstration. Kids need to be reminded that not all long-haired people are the bad guy, and that not all nice-looking people have good intentions.

I applaud the Lawrence Police Department for their involvement in Kids Police Camp; demonstrations like this could make a big difference to these kids someday. Keeping kids safe is a job for all of us. The Lawrence Police Department has a great start on that.
