Missing the point
To the editor:
Call me crazy, but I think that most Republican members in the Kansas Legislature have totally missed the point. The members of the Kansas Supreme Court are not standing on top of the Capitol, shouting down to all lawmakers, “I am all-powerful, bow to my will.” The Supreme Court is simply asking all legislators to fund education equally and adequately, which they failed to accomplish during the regular session.
“Miller and other speakers said they were duty-bound to defy or rein in the court, describing their stand as similar to the Founding Fathers’ fight for independence from England.” (Journal-World, June 19) Oh, please. What ever happened to good old Kansas humility and honesty? I’m sorry; I must have missed the Kansas Supreme Court ruling that raised tariffs on tea.
The fuss Republicans are making about the ruling seems like a thinly veiled attempt to ignore the real issues our state is facing. This is not about the Legislature, politics, politicians, the governor, the courts or the justices, and more importantly this ruling is not about the Republican Party. This is about the future of our great state. This is about the future of our children. It is time for Kansans to let their legislators know that they are sick of these political games. We need brave, courageous leaders who will face our school funding problems quickly, fairly and adequately.
