Police report child homicide

Lawrence Police Tuesday night arrested a man in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl.

Jason W. Dillon, 22, Lawrence, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and abuse of a child, said Sgt. Dan Ward, police spokesman.

Dillon is the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Ward said. The girl and her mother were not identified, and further questions were referred to Douglas County Dist. Atty. Charles Branson. He couldn’t be reached late Tuesday night for comment.

Ward gave the following account of the police investigation:

Police were called about 5:30 p.m. Saturday by Lawrence Memorial Hospital staff about a possible child abuse case. The girl had been brought to the hospital by her mother and Dillon for treatment of a head injury. The girl was transported to a Kansas City area hospital, where she died Sunday.

Tuesday an autopsy was conducted and the Douglas County Coroner determined that the death was a homicide. Investigators believe the girl suffered her injuries at a residence in the 1100 block of George Court.

Police interviewed several members of the victims family and family friends, Ward said.

No other information about the case was released.
