Recycling center to reopen at Wal-Mart
The Wal-Mart Community Recycling Center’s temporary facility is expected to be open this morning. The facility closed Sunday afternoon in response to undisclosed safety concerns.
“We needed to move some things around to make it a little safer, more user-friendly,” said Ruth Becker, green team coordinator at the Lawrence Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa.
Plans call for replacing the facility’s large, semi-trailer-size bins with smaller units. Becker said she expected the new units to be ready for service Tuesday.
The temporary facility opened last month after the recycling center was closed to accommodate the discount store’s plans for a 94,427-square-foot addition. A new facility is under construction.

Lindley Annex to be torn down Wednesday
A World War II-era temporary building is scheduled for demolition Wednesday at Kansas University.
Contractors are scheduled to knock down Lindley Annex starting around 7 a.m. Wednesday. KU officials say the building is rotting and has been damaged by termites.
The 10,000-square-foot building, just south of Lindley Hall, was a military cafeteria during World War II, then was donated to KU in 1947.
The annex became home to studios for the School of Architecture and Urban Design. The construction of Eaton Hall and an addition to the Baehr Audio-Reader Center led to a domino effect that left Lindley Annex empty.
KU officials have been eyeing the structure for demolition for almost 10 years. Much of the approximately $150,000 it will take to knock the structure down went to removing asbestos inside the structure.
The space where the building sits will become a parking lot.
