Park City, Utah ? Search-and-rescue crews continued combing a rugged mountain area Sunday for an 11-year-old Boy Scout who went missing while on a camping trip with a friend.

Brennan Hawkins was last seen Friday at a campground struggling to remove gear near a wall for rock climbers. At the same time, a campground employee at the wall saw the boy’s friend walking down a dirt road toward his family’s campsite about 200 yards away.

The employee looked away and then did not see either boy when he looked back, said Dave Booth, chief deputy for the Summit County Sheriff’s Department.

“He must have separated from his friend,” Brennan’s mother, Jody Hawkins, said Saturday. “He doesn’t have a great sense of direction.”

About 1,000 searchers on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles combed the rugged mountain area Saturday about 100 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. Helicopters scoured the area from the air.

Brennan, who recently completed the fifth grade, was wearing a blue sweat shirt, black shorts and white tennis shoes when he disappeared. But search officials said their biggest concern was the river, not exposure.

“It’s over a man’s head in some places, and the current is swift,” Booth said.

The county includes the Uinta Mountains, where a 12-year-old Boy Scout has been missing since last August. In the fall of 2003, a mother and daughter went missing while hiking when they were apparently caught off guard by a snowstorm. Their remains were found last summer.
