FAU fan

To the editor:

Tuesday, Chuck Woodling wrote that “nobody takes Florida Atlantic seriously because the school is only four years old.” FAU was founded in 1964, not 2001, and it’s a decent regional university with some internationally recognized programs. I believe that Mr. Woodling has confused the football program with the university – something sports enthusiasts and reporters sometimes do. But it’s not right.

He gets his region wrong, too, describing Boca Raton as “suburban Miami.” But Boca is about 40 miles away from the Miami limit – it’s like describing Lawrence as being in suburban Kansas City, Missouri.

FAU may be a football pushover (we hope), but it’s a strongly academic university with only a tenuous connection to its football team.
