Celebration commemorates end of slavery

Lawrence is having its second annual Juneteenth celebration this week.

The celebration commemorates the end of slavery. Specifically, June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America, in Texas, were notified of their freedom.

Remaining events:

2 p.m. today – Children at the Boys & Girls Club, 1520 Haskell Ave., will participate in a poster and essay contest about Juneteenth. For information about registering, call the club at 841-5672.

6 p.m. Wednesday – Oral history presentations and gospel music at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

Thursday and Friday – A three-on-three basketball tournament will start at noon Thursday at the East Lawrence Center, 1245 E. 15th St. Friday’s games start at 9 a.m. Teams will be organized according to age groups, and there is a $10 fee per team. For more information, call 832-7950.

8 p.m. Friday – Teen dance at the East Lawrence Center.

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday – Family Fun Festival in Burcham Park, 200 Ind. Underground Railroad site tours also will be conducted.
