School board gives Weseman raise

The Lawrence school board on Monday voted to give Superintendent Randy Weseman a retroactive salary increase of 1.66 percent for the 2004-05 school year. It is the same increase approved in April for administrative and other noncontract staff members. Weseman is in the final year of his contract.

The board also reviewed its calendar for the budget process. The board plans to give preliminary approval to its 2005-06 budget July 28.

The Kansas Supreme Court on June 3 ruled the legislature must pump an additional $285 million into schools. Kathy Johnson, the Lawrence district’s budget director, said Monday she did not yet know how much additional funds that would bring to the district. The board continues to wait for a final state school finance plan. At the latest, Johnson said, the board could delay preliminary budget approval to August 1.
