Poor welcome

To the editor:

We recently moved my daughter to Lawrence to spend the summer for an internship. She woke up Tuesday, May 24, to find that her car had been towed from the student apartment complex where she is living. Without going into whether or not the towing was justified, let me tell you her experience.

She was told it would cost $125 to get her car back. When she arrived at the towing company the next day, she was told the fee had to be paid in cash and the total amount was $215. This represented the original fee plus 3 days storage. She of course protested that there couldn’t be three days storage, so the person said maybe the wrong date had been used and lowered the amount to two days storage. So even though she picked the car up the very next day, she had to pay two days storage.

So this young girl in a new town has her car held hostage with no recourse but to pay $185 to get her car back. Is there any regulation of this? Welcome to Lawrence, Kan.
