Commissioners may change rule

Douglas County Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. today ¢ County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Bottom line

Douglas County commissioners will consider a temporary ban on building permits for tracts relying on the five-acre exemption rule.

Background

The exemption currently allows landowners with at least five acres of rural property to build a home without rezoning and platting, often a costly process. The proposed moratorium would require landowners to have at least 10 acres instead of five. Commissioners are concerned some developers are abusing the exemption and creating subdivisions that could cause problems in the future.
