Predator returned to state hospital
Leavenworth County leaders have succeeded for now in their effort to oust a sexual predator from the county.
State officials said Monday that Leroy A. Hendricks, 70, was removed from a home in southwest Leavenworth County late Friday night and sent back to live on the grounds of Osawatomie State Hospital.
The question is what happens to him next.
“Nothing has been determined yet,” said Mike Deines, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
SRS is trying to find a place to establish a supervised group home that will house Hendricks and potentially two more aging sexual predators at a cost of $278,000 for the first 15 months. A judge recently ruled that Hendricks was ready to try living in the community again after a decade of treatment at Larned State Hospital.
Hendricks had a brief stay last week at a ranch-style home at 24130 Golden Road in southwest Leavenworth County. That site was chosen for him after Lawrence residents opposed a plan to set up the group home here.
But a Leavenworth County judge ordered Hendricks out late Friday after the county commission learned of the move and won a temporary restraining order. Commissioners allege the setup violates county zoning laws that regulate businesses, group homes and detention centers.
“The county is pleased that we were able to have the matter heard by the court and have our initial request granted,” County Counselor David Van Parys said.
A hearing on the restraining order is likely to be scheduled for later in the week in Leavenworth County District Court, Van Parys said. A hearing initially was set for early Wednesday, but one attorney had a scheduling conflict, he said.
