County works on rural planning timeline

Douglas County commissioners on Monday discussed a timeline to abide by when dealing with county subdivision regulations.

“I think we ought to be fiercely determined to get something done by the end of the year,” said Commission Chairman Charles Jones.

The commissioners want to have a fix to questions looming about rural development by the end of the year.

Some of the issues that need to be dealt with are road designations, provisions for treated water and the five-acre exemption rule.

The commission is trying to deal promptly with rural planning issues because of a possible moratorium on the five-acre exemption rule. Commissioners will vote on the moratorium Wednesday. The moratorium will be backdated to June 1 and end Nov. 31 if passed.

Commissioners have said they want county subdivision regulations in place by the end of the year. The moratorium is supposed to create a sense of urgency, Commissioner Bob Johnson said.

Summer school classes begin today

Some Kansas University students will return to class today for the university’s summer sessions.

Summer classes end July 29. There will be no classes on July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

Fund-raiser

Hundreds expected at Relay for Life event

More than 800 people from 74 teams are expected to participate in Friday night’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life at the Free State High School track.

This year’s theme is “A Star-Studded Night at the Relay,” which organizers described as a “fun-filled, overnight event” to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones who died of cancer and to raise money for cancer research.

The relay starts at 7 p.m. The opening lap honors the courage of survivors; 200 survivors are expected to participate. A luminaria display honors survivors and commemorates those who have died. Food and concessions will be provided by local businesses. There will be children’s activities and contests and rock bands.

The event includes a silent auction. Baskets with items to be sold through the auction can be viewed this week at Douglas County Bank, 3101 Iowa.

The bank is the site of Relay For Life’s Bank Night today and Wednesday so relayers can turn in the money they raised. Any money turned in after Wednesday will go to the Relay For Life Fund but won’t count toward individual and team totals.
