Mausoleum mess

To the editor:

I’m glad the Attorney General’s office saw Memorial Park Cemetery in violation of state law by failing to “establish a fund dedicated to ongoing upkeep of graves.”

Now, I hope the Attorney General’s office will make the city of Lawrence do the same thing.

The mausoleum on the north side of Oak Park Cemetery, which the city maintains, was given to the city with a fund to maintain the building. They spent all the money, allowed the roof to deteriorate until the years of snow and rain loosened the face plates of the vaults so bad that they had to lock the building to prevent people from getting hurt.

Then after a few more years, they had to board up the windows in the doors so nobody could see the mess.

I hope, before I die, to see the vaults repaired so I can pay respect to my mother, father, sister, two sets of grandparents, uncles and aunts and all the people of early Lawrence returned to a place of reverence and peace!
