Sharing a smile

To the editor:

As this school year comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many, many wonderful people who made the effort to smile and wave at me while I was on duty as crossing guard at the corners of Fifth and Maine, and 19th and Massachusetts since November.

First, I would like to thank Ms. Janice Seymour for taking the time to write her warm letter of commendation to the school board. It warmed my heart and encouraged me to keep up the smiles and waves. I would like to thank Dave, who shoveled the whole corner when it snowed! I would like to thank the young man who stopped briefly and gave me a bright bouquet of lovely daffodils this spring. Also, I must thank Mickey and her son for the lovely daffodil! I thank Eric Weslander for featuring me in the article he wrote for the Journal-World (March 20).

I need to thank my friend JoAnn Snavely for advising me how to dress so as not to freeze on those very cold early mornings! And finally, I want to thank all the darling children who shared jokes and riddles, flowers and treats and smiles and waves on their way to and from school. I truly hope it has been an interchange of goodwill for all. Have a good summer, everyone!

Susan Simmons,

Lawrence
