Memorial scheduled for slain librarian

Friends of a slain Lawrence woman are invited to a memorial service for her on Thursday, one year to the day after she was killed.

The service for former Kansas University librarian Mary E. Miller, 46, will be at 4 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery next to a plot where her ashes will eventually be buried.

Miller’s husband, Martin K. Miller, was sentenced last week to life in prison for her death.

Jurors convicted him at his trial of strangling Mary Miller on July 28, 2004 in the couple’s home at 2105 Carolina St.

Illegal sexual conduct report investigated

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office is investigating a report that a 24-year-old man had illegal sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl twice between June and July.

One incident happened within city limits, and the other happened in the county, said Lt. Doug Woods, a sheriff’s spokesman.

The suspect is an acquaintance of the alleged victim’s family, Woods said.

Under Kansas law, children ages 15 and younger are not considered able to consent to sex.

No arrests have been made, but a report has been forwarded to Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office for review.
