Truck slams into dance and cheer studio
A Lawrence dance and cheer studio was damaged over the weekend when a truck careened into the building.
Owners of Dance City, 5150 Clinton Pkwy., discovered the damage to the business Saturday morning.
The force of the impact sent shattered glass flying throughout the gym and knocked trophies off the wall. Tiny shards of glass are now embedded in the gym’s foam pit, used for tumbling. Employees said the pit could not be cleaned and was a total loss.
Police said the driver of the truck, a 22-year-old Lawrence man, was cited for careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and for having no proof of insurance.
Fire investigated at storage business
A fire that broke out late Monday in a storage building in south Lawrence is under investigation.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded about 10:30 p.m. to reports of a fire at A-1 Mini Storage, 2910 Iowa. The first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the storage units, Battalion Chief Rob Kort said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and were trying to determine the cause. Some other nearby storage units sustained smoke damage, Kort said. Total losses hadn’t been determined.
