Hot dogs
To the editor:
As a follow-up to the article on dogs left in vehicles during summer months (July 15), I would like to address another issue along those lines.
I am out at Clinton Lake every weekend and I cannot believe the number of people who decide to bring their dogs with them on their boats in the sweltering heat. Most people will anchor in a cove and relax. But what I don’t understand is why these people bring out their dogs with absolutely no shade. These dogs basically sit on the boat and fry.
I couldn’t believe what I witnessed last weekend: a couple brought out their dog and had no cover on their boat to provide shade. The guy did allow the dog in the water once. After that, if the dog tried to jump in the water, he would restrain it. This dog was pacing frantically because of the heat it had to endure while the owners were completely oblivious to their dog’s stress. Finally, the dog started jumping in the water by itself. This is just one of many instances where I’ve seen dogs in complete distress trying to find a way to cool themselves down from the intense heat.
Folks, when the temperature is past 80 degrees, please leave Fido home. I’m sure you think it will be fun for them; however, making a dog – who has a fur coat on that you don’t – sit in a boat and roast all afternoon is anything but fun for them.
