Animal control

Humane Society takes custody of pit bulls

The Lawrence Humane Society has taken custody of 11 pit bulls – nine puppies and two adults – found abandoned without food last week in a home at 1301 E. 15th St.

Police said they were alerted to the dogs July 12 after the landlord came to check the home and found the dogs inside. The electricity was turned off and there was no dog food in sight, according to a police report.

“They were emaciated. They were dehydrated,” said Midge Grinstead, the humane society’s director.

Authorities don’t know how long the dogs had been left alone. Police know who the previous tenants were, but Grinstead said they haven’t been found yet.

Even if the tenants are found, Grinstead said, it’s possible they won’t claim the dogs.

“Especially with pit bulls, it’s always amazing to me how many people keep other people’s dogs for them,” she said. “They move them around so often to hide them, especially if they fight them.”

Grinstead said in this case, there were no signs they were being used or bred for fighting.
