Smoking ban changes to be considered

Lawrence City Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets ¢ Sunflower Broadband Channel 25 ¢ Meeting documents online at www.lawrenceks.org

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider changes to the city’s ban on workplace smoking. Specifically, commissioners will consider rewriting parts of the ordinance to more clearly define what business owners must do if they see someone smoking in their establishments.

Background

Several bar and restaurant owners have asked the city for the clarifications. The proposed ordinance would hold business owners harmless if they take the following actions when they see a smoker: Ask the person to stop smoking or to smoke outside; ask the person to leave the premises if he refuses to stop smoking; and take all lawful actions, including calling the police, to remove the person if the person does not willfully leave.
