KU tweaks its fall schedule

There’s good news for Kansas University students: Their winter break has been extended by one day.

The Kansas Board of Regents has approved a change to the start date for KU’s spring schedule. Instead of starting Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, classes will start Friday, Jan. 20.

The change corrects an error made in the university calendar when it was adopted three years ago. The spring semester mistakenly was given 76 days instead of the traditional 75 days.

University of Kansas Hospital gets gift

A $1 million gift to the University of Kansas Hospital will purchase equipment for a heart rhythm center at the Center for Advanced Heart Care under construction, the hospital announced Tuesday.

The gift is from Annette Bloch, the widow of Richard Bloch, who co-founded H&R Bloch.

The money will create the Richard and Annette Bloch Heart Rhythm Center, which will evaluate and treat patients with a history of problems with fast or slow heart rhythms, patients with pacemakers, patients who experience alterations in consciousness and patients who have an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

Richard Bloch suffered from heart problems caused by cancer treatment.

He received care at the KU hospital.
