Change by design
To the editor:
Since the creationism/evolution controversy goes on with the alternative of opting for one or the other I would like to suggest an alternative approach.
Personally, I believe that evolution has two aspects: The fossil record of the changes within species by a development pattern. This seems to me to be firm science and, to me, fully acceptable. But there is a second aspect of the evolution teaching, which is what caused the changes.
One part is that our genetic makeup changes and some changes are helpful and thrive while others are not and disappear. But why is there this ability of the genetic makeup to change? The usual scientific answer is that the change is by chance. Yet there seems a wonderful wisdom in the life forms and the interrelationship between the varied forms.
When I studied probability in a course in college on counseling and testing, I really came to understand that this complexity of chance was almost beyond belief as a source of all this change which had such good results. Somehow, this seems to require some kind of intelligent design. This does not require a biblical support but could be more acceptable to many Christians and even to some scientists.
