KU roads to close for construction
Two Kansas University roads will close this week for construction.
The roads will close Wednesday, with construction slated to be done by Aug. 13.
Closing are:
¢ 15th Street between Burdick Drive and Naismith Drive.
¢ Northbound lanes of Naismith Drive between Irving Hill Road and 15th Street.
Detour routes for both closures will be Burdick and Irving Hill roads.
Mental health center receives $10,000 gift
The Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center has received a $10,000 gift to support a program designed to provide education on mental health issues.
Dr. Franklin C. Shontz made the gift to support the Nancy Shontz Educational Series, named after his late wife. Nancy Shontz was a former Lawrence city commissioner and longtime advocate of promoting mental health education.
The series provides mental health education to mental health care professionals and to the general public. The series’ first seminar is scheduled for November. It will feature Dr. Steve Martino from Yale University, who will speak about Motivational Interviewing Techniques.
Crash injures four Friday near Meriden
Meriden – A two-vehicle accident Friday night south of Meriden injured four people who were taken to a Topeka hospital by ambulance.
The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. on Kansas Highway 4 just south of Meriden when a southbound 2004 Pontiac was making a U-turn and was struck by a transport truck, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
All of the injuries occurred to people in the Pontiac, the report said. They were identified as the driver, Melissa M. Hewitt, 36; Jeffrey Hewitt, 40; James Hewitt, 66; and Makayla Hewitt, 10, all from Meriden.
Melissa Hewitt and Makayla Hewitt were treated and released and James Hewitt was in satisfactory condition Saturday, a spokeswoman at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center said. No information was released about Jeffrey Hewitt.
The Pontiac was struck by a 1998 Kenworth CMV driven by Royce E. Burchett, 57, Wichita. He was not injured.
