To the editor:

Oh, the Fourth of July! Too much noise! Too much litter! Where does one go for respite?

My husband and I wanted to escape our hometown in Nebraska, but where to go? Ah, we considered, if any place has a composite I.Q. high enough to encourage a sane Fourth it would be Lawrence, Kansas.

We were right. Our thanks to your intelligent citizenry and courageous City Commission.

Take the plug outta yer hiney. Let kids and adults have some fun. What is the big deal. The few want to control the masses, so their poor wittle ears don't hear a firecracker. Go back and try to re-buy a winning football team.

Every fourth of July season, Neanderthals once again discover the mysteries of fire, and are impressed by loud noises and colorful lights. And since they each blow about $40-$100 a person, that is a lot of money wasted in Lawrence alone.

My apartment complex is littered with firecrackers, pieces of bottle rockets, mortar shells, and remnants of fountains. Not to mention the million or so wire remnants from sparklers.

It just sickens me. Just go to the professional show, and save your money for the picnic dinner you are bringing.

For real, people can't deal with one day of fireworks and deal with a night of booms going on late into the night? Our soldiers over in Iraq deal with it every day. I am sorry that your poor ears can't handle the noise. Let the kids and the adults that still want to act like kids blow stuff up on the fourth. It is a lot of fun and the fireworks are cool to watch.
