Score KU gear on eBay

Want to snag a piece of the former Allen Fieldhouse scoreboard or a genuine jersey worn by Kansas University basketball walk-on Terry Nooner? The clock is ticking.

Pat Schuster and Jeff McNight finish taking apart the last pieces of the old Allen Fieldhouse scoreboard. The Kansas University athletic department is offering a piece of the scoreboard, among other items, in an online auction that ends today.

Today is the last day to bid online for five Kansas University-related items up for sale in the KU athletic department’s first online auction. The items have been listed for the past week on the online auction site eBay.

So far, the item fetching the highest bids is a 19-foot-wide, 800-pound portion of the main scoreboard that hung in Allen Fieldhouse from 1991 until the end of the last season. As of Thursday afternoon, the highest bid was $2,602.

Other items for sale are one of the smaller scoreboards that hung above a tunnel in the fieldhouse ($1,526); a jersey worn by Nooner ($152.50); a basketball rim ($825); and a football jersey worn by former KU football star Tony Sands ($305.99).

Associate Athletic Director Jim Marchiony said KU leaders got the idea to sell the items online after seeing other schools have successful auctions.

“We thought these are the best items right now that we have available,” he said. “We’ll certainly be looking to do this again and to come up with other items we could use for our next auction.”

Proceeds will go into the general athletics budget and aren’t earmarked for a specific purpose, he said.
