Tax preparer, community group to push taxpaper education

? H&R Block Inc. said earlier this month that it plans to work with a community organization to tell low-income families across the country that they may be eligible for earned income tax credits.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, estimated last year that up to 7 million families failed to sign up for the tax credit despite being eligible, losing out on around $12 billion in potential refunds.

Kansas City-based H&R Block, the nation’s largest tax preparer, and ACORN said they will focus their efforts in 65 cities, distributing flyers, providing educational videos to community centers and even going door-to-door.

H&R Block also said it will provide more information to consumers about their options to get tax refunds quicker and reduce the fees it charges for loans it makes on clients’ anticipated refunds. The company has faced several lawsuits over these loans, which critics complain charge high interest.

Officials with Washington D.C.-based ACORN have criticized tax preparer Jackson Hewitt for similar policies, and the two groups are in negotiations.
