Traffic accident traps woman in car

Emergency crews had to cut roof off vehicle to free her

Emergency medical technicians Friday night had to cut the roof off a Chevrolet Cavalier to reach a woman who was injured in a three-car accident at Ninth Street and Emery Road.

Viviana Yaluk, 20, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in a neck brace after the car she was riding in struck a Jeep Cherokee in the intersection of the two streets. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

A Lawrence Memorial Hospital spokesman said Yaluk was in good condition and was expected to be released Friday night after an evaluation.

The accident occurred at 6:20 p.m. Yaluk was riding in a 1998 Cavalier driven by Celeste Morgan, 22, traveling west on Ninth Street.

Morgan attempted to make a left turn onto Emery when her car struck a white 1999 Jeep Cherokee headed east on Ninth Street.

The driver of the Jeep, Brandon Bohning, 20, said as he approached the red traffic signal on Emery, he began to slow down, but then continued through the intersection without stopping after the light turned green. Once in the intersection, he said, he collided with the Cavalier, which was turning left.

The collision then sent the Cavalier sliding into a Honda Accord that was sitting at the traffic signal on Emery. The driver of that car, Lauren Prathor, 21, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., was not injured. Morgan and Bohning were not injured either.

Prathor and Bohning drove their cars away from the accident. The Cavalier was removed by a tow truck.

Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Fellers said the accident was under investigation.

Six emergency vehicles responded to the accident, which blocked an eastbound lane of traffic for roughly 40 minutes.
