Social Security employee pleads not guilty

? A Social Security Administration employee indicted for manipulating records to help two relatives pleaded not guilty Friday as her family looked on.

Estela Valverde, 31, was released on a $10,000 bond after appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Humphreys. Valverde has worked at the agency’s Dodge City office since 1998.

She was charged with seven counts for allegedly manipulating Social Security records in January 2002 for her sister-in-law, Beatriz Estrella, 30, and Beatriz Estrella’s sister, Selene Estrella, 29, all of Dodge City.

Prosecutors contend the Estrella sisters are illegal aliens who used counterfeit birth certificates to obtain U.S. passports.

They then presented those passports to Valverde at the Social Security office so their records would indicate they were citizens and new Social Security cards would be issued, according to the indictment.

The indictment also alleges Valverde made false statements to investigators, aided and abetted the unlawful use of a passport, and made false entries into official government records.

Beatriz Estrella faces seven counts and Selene Estrella faces five counts in connection with the case. Their court appearance was continued to Wednesday.
