Show of respect

To the editor:

On Monday, I was driving west on Sixth Street close to the downtown area. I approached the funeral home at Sixth and Indiana just as a funeral procession was leaving. I dutifully pulled my car to the right and stopped to show my respect to the family and friends of the departed. I doubt I knew any of the mourners, nor the person they were mourning. While I was stopped, several cars zipped by me and I caught a couple of exasperated looks from those drivers.

When did people become so disrespectful or in such a hurry that they couldn’t spare a minute or two to stop? Can anyone REALLY be in that much of a hurry to go anywhere? Perhaps people aren’t familiar with the custom to pull over and stop for a funeral procession, as well as to cede the right of way to a procession (especially at intersections).

Please show the mourners this little bit of courtesy and respect. Eleven years after my father’s funeral, I still remember the many unnamed, unknown people who showed me and my family that same respect and try to forget the few rude drivers who cut in and out of the procession or neglected to at least slow down or pause for even the first few cars of the procession.
