Storm causes bus delays, wrecks

Icy roads Wednesday morning caused some delays in getting some area students to school.

Rick Gammill, director of special operations, transportation and safety for Lawrence Public Schools, said about six buses were 30 to 45 minutes late to school because of road conditions.

Schools that were affected were notified about the delays, he said. Most of the buses dealing with the icy road conditions were on routes in the northern part of the school district.

All students were safely delivered to their schools, said district spokeswoman Julie Boyle.

On Monday and Tuesday, buses actually slid off the road.

Two buses slid into ditches when they were going up hills and their back tires slid on ice, Gammill said.

A bus that carries students to South Junior High and Prairie Park schools slid into a ditch on North 1100 Road on Tuesday morning.

Monday afternoon, a small school bus carrying Southwest Junior High students home slid into a ditch west of town.

After both accidents, the students on the buses were picked up by other buses within 10 to 15 minutes, Gammill said.

Gammill said the bad weather had been stressing him out.

“Sometimes they’ll thaw and then overnight they’ll freeze again,” he said of roads. “You worry about getting the kids to school; then it rains again and you worry about getting them home.”

A Lawrence Alternative High School student was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance Tuesday after he slipped and hit his head on a sidewalk.

He fell outside the Holcom Park Recreation Center, where alternative high students take physical education classes, Boyle said.
