Warmer weather heading in Saturday afternoon
One more day. That’s all the time that’s left before the Lawrence area will finally be free of a mid-week winter storm that turned much of the Great Plains into a frozen tundra.
“Tomorrow we finally break through from our chains,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “We’ll be above freezing and that will let us get rid of that ice.”
As of 11 a.m. about 10 Westar Energy customers in the Lawrence area were still without power. Westar spokeswoman Gina Penzig said it’s hoped all outages are fixed by the end of the day. She also urged anyone without power to report it to Westar at 1-800-LightKs. As many as 1,200 homes had been knocked out earlier this week.
Most schools in the Lawrence area are back in operation. Oskaloosa and Basehor-Linwood were the only school districts in the Lawrence area that canceled classes again today.
Reith said today’s temperature would reach a high of 32 by late afternoon, under mostly cloudy skies, with southwesterly winds 5 to 10 mph. Overnight, the thermometer will drop to 16 by early Saturday morning.
Then above normal temperatures start to arrive, Reith said. Temperatures will climb to a high of 42 on Saturday under mostly sunny skies. The average high for this time of year is 39.
“From Sunday into Monday, things look absolutely wonderful,” Reith said.
Sunday’s morning low will be 33 and climb to a high of 51 by Sunday afternoon, under sunny skies. Monday’s morning low will be 35, with Monday’s high 54.
