Free State girls falter against SM South

? Free State High’s girls basketball team helplessly watched a five-point halftime lead slip away in the third quarter, and Shawnee Mission South went on to win, 47-34, Thursday night.

The Firebirds (2-4) led 26-21 at the break, before the being outscored by the Raiders in the third quarter, 19-4

“Extremely disappointing,” FSHS coach Bryan Duncan said of the setback. “We played well in the first half, but they just outplayed us and outcoached us in the second half. Period.”

Jamie Stanclift led Free State with 13 points, the Firebirds’ only double-digit scorer. Banaka Okwuone had 10 rebounds to go with two points.

Free State will play host Tuesday to Olathe East.

“We’ve just got to get better and a lot more mentally tough,” Duncan lamented, “and the younger players have to learn how to get better.”
