To the editor:
On New Year’s Eve, I adopted a kitten from the Lawrence Humane Society, the third I have adopted since coming to Lawrence in 1993. In the intervening years, I have seen a huge, positive change in the atmosphere, morale and the day-to-day operations at the Lawrence Humane Society. I attribute this mostly to Midge Grinstead’s leadership. The kitten I adopted had been well-cared for, emerging from a poor start in life to become a healthy, well-socialized, delightful pet.
The shelter, run by the Lawrence Humane Society, Grinstead and the volunteer and paid staff, is a true bright spot in Lawrence, deserving of community support. In addition to caring for unfortunate animals, it also educates many people of all ages in the community.
The child who learns kindness for animals is one who is less likely to hurt other humans as it matures. How we care for animals is a true reflection of community values. Let’s hear it for Midge and the Lawrence Humane Society!
