Many benefits

To the editor:

I am writing in response to Mr. David Holroyd’s comments regarding the bond issue in the Feb. 24 Journal-World. Specifically he said, “I oppose it … It really benefits nobody.”

I’m a teacher and coach at South Junior High School. I teach science in a portable classroom where the only water source is a drinking fountain. This makes it difficult to do labs and clean up. I have little storage for equipment because my closet is filled with wires and components for Internet access. I have cords strung across my walls and floors because there are not enough electrical outlets. The ceilings in most portables are cracked and look like they could collapse any minute.

I have seen many teachers and students fall on the boardwalk between portables due to inclement weather and warped boards. Our custodial staff does an excellent job of trying to keep up, but the carpet and boards are constantly slippery.

The only ones that seem to enjoy the portables are the skunks, who have a way of reminding us that this is their home, if you know what I mean.

All this and I haven’t even started on the main building yet.

If you have not visited SJHS, you are cordially invited to do so. I will be your personal guide. Please plan on several hours because there are many deficiencies to see. I’m sure we can convince you that MANY will benefit from this bond issue.

Beth Weishaar,

Lawrence
