Not funny here

To the editor:

Conservative religious members of our State Board of Education are again bringing embarrassment to all of Kansas with their position on the teaching of evolution (while providing comic relief for the rest of the country). These people feel no shame in trying to bring THEIR religion into our public schools and they have no shame in openly displaying their gross ignorance on the subject of science.

Creationism and intelligent design ARE NOT sciences. The ideas are not testable or verifiable by any known or accepted scientific methodologies. What they represent are assertions based on pre-scientific understandings of nature reflected in biblical writings, and adopted as religious faith. That’s fine, but they should leave it at that and not muddy the minds of our children and diminish the value of their scientific educational opportunities.
