GOP ‘values’

To the editor:

In your pages, the Kansas Republican Party chairman excoriates Gov. Sebelius, as well as the entire Democratic Party, for not having the same “values” as Kansans, ostensibly the same values of the Republican Party. Apparently these “values” refer to vetting a known gay male prostitute, allowing him to lob softball questions to the leader of their “party of values,” as well as spread Republican propaganda under the auspices of real journalism.

Perhaps he also was referring to the values of giving large tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, while at the same time increasing the tax burden on the middle class and the working poor, cutting vital services for the poor and nonpoor alike, and (they hope this will happen) cutting benefits to our nation’s retired elderly.

Maybe he was referring to the values of scrapping the Constitution’s First Amendment barring establishment of a state religion, or the values of codifying hatred of minorities. Possibly he was thinking about the values of repealing environmental protections and giving big business a free pass, often at the expense of average workers, workers much like the majority of Kansas residents. I have lived in Kansas for my entire life, and the aforementioned values do not describe me, nor do they describe the values of the Democratic Party.

Andrew Duncan,
