Weather delays GlobalFlyer takeoff

? Weather conditions have again delayed the GlobalFlyer take-off from Salina, officials there announced today.

Steve Fossett had planned to attempt the world’s first solo, around-the-world, non-stop flight this weekend, with a launch from Salina Regional Airport. But weather data gathered today showed “unacceptable ground winds at Salina airport and turbulence during Steve’s ascent.”

“What a disappointment,” Fossett said in an e-mail sent to crew members working on the flight. “As eager as I am to start this flight, everything must be right.”

The flight has been delayed several times since early January, when it was first scheduled.

The next possible window of opportunity will be March 1-3, said representatives of Virgin Atlantic, which is sponsoring the world record attempt.
