Private agendas

To the editor:

Exactly what fantasy world does the Living Wage Alliance live in? Did I miss a public vote on this issue? No, their agenda was never put to a vote of the people, but rather was pushed through with the collusion of several city commissioners. None of the recent city ordinances or proclamations can claim to have had a consensus of the community; not the fireworks ban, the opposition to the Patriot Act, the living wage ordinance, the dog leash ordinance or the smoking ban.

Some of these recent decisions had more signatures presented in opposition to them than any single member of the City Commission got in votes in the last election. The people of Lawrence were denied the opportunity to express their will through the vote but were handed these ordinances by special-interest groups, none of which can claim majority support in the community.

The people of Lawrence were denied the opportunity to vote on issues that clearly divided the city and, when opposition was registered before the City Commission, it was ignored. The city continues to be run by elitist special-interest groups and their private agendas, not by the “will of the community.”
