College Goal Sunday offers financial aid assistance

? High school seniors and their parents can get some help today filling out forms to get money for college.

Volunteers and financial aid professionals will help students and parents fill out Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms at the Dole Institute of Politics. Two $250 scholarships will also be given away.

Parents should bring their 2004 income tax returns. The event, College Goal Sunday, is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at the institute, 2350 Petefish Drive.

“FAFSA forms can be very confusing, and they should never be an obstacle to higher education,” said Marion Jones, College Goal Sunday chairwoman. “We want to be sure every student who plans to go to college has the chance to receive financial aid.”

The U.S. Department of Education offers more than $60 billion in grants and loans each year.

About half of undergraduate college students enrolled in school year 1999-2000 did not fill out the FAFSA form, according to the American Council on Education.

About 850,000 of those students were probably eligible for a federal Pell Grant, which provides up to $4,050 a year for low-income students.

College Goal Sundays take place in several states each year.

In Kansas, the event is coordinated in Kansas by the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and other volunteers. It is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City, Lumina Foundation for Education, The Sallie Mae Fund and USA Funds.

College Goal Sunday will also be at Washburn University in Topeka and Kansas City, Kan., Community College. Those workshops are also from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today. Scholarships also will be awarded at these sites.
