KU fieldhouse tops ESPN poll

A couple of weeks back, Philip Bradley got an e-mail from a friend, asking him to vote for Allen Fieldhouse in ESPN.com’s poll of best college basketball arenas.

Bradley liked the idea so much, he forwarded the e-mail to 500 or more of his friends and business associates.

“My computer warned me that I was sending out spam,” Bradley said.

Thanks to Bradley and other Jayhawk faithful, Allen Fieldhouse is leading the poll that asks readers to rank the greatest home court advantage among the top 10 men’s teams, the toughest venue in all of college basketball and the place respondents would most like to watch a game.

Even more satisfying to the crimson-and-blue, the hated Duke Blue Devils and their Cameron Indoor Stadium come in a close second in each of those categories.

“We just have better e-mail skills than anyone else,” Bradley said.

The poll went online Jan. 25, and though it no longer appears on the front page of ESPN.com or the site’s basketball page, the site is still taking votes — and Jayhawk fans continue to contact friends.

“I got it from two different people this morning, so I went on and voted,” said Bill Woodard, communications director for the Spencer Museum of Art. He then forwarded the e-mail to two dozen of his friends Friday morning.

“And these are people all over the country, whoever I had on my list that were KU fans,” Woodard said.

Allen Fieldhouse, shown during last year's Kansas-Oklahoma game, is making waves on ESPN.com.

By Friday afternoon, more than 106,000 votes had been cast, with KU receiving more than a third of first-place votes in the major categories. Duke came in a close second, with other college basketball teams divvying up the remaining votes.

Jim Marchiony, spokesman for the KU athletic department, was glad for the support.

“I figured something like that was going on, because I had received an e-mail from a couple of different people,” Marchiony said.

“It’s just another example of — you have to call it a fervor that Kansas fans have for their team,” Marchiony said. “It is rare that you get a fan base as devoted as Jayhawk fans.”

Bradley, a Lawrence resident and director of the Kansas Licensed Beverage Assn., is actually a Kansas State alumnus.

“But I’m a Kansan first,” he said.

“Being in a smaller market, it’s often harder for us to get the recognition I believe we deserve,” he said. “I wanted people who knew something about it to make a good decision and cast a vote for KU.”
