Hunting rights

To the editor:

The article in Monday’s Journal-World about the deer population was somewhat deceptive. The fact that some landowners do lease the land is true, but this does next to nothing to help control our deer population because the people who lease it for the most part are hunting guides. The hunters that they guide are mostly from out of state and only want to shoot the trophy bucks. This does nothing to assist in the deer herd management.

As a deer hunter and someone very interested in the management of our wildlife, I would like to see the nonresident tags done away with. If more of the landowners would get to know the local hunters that ask to hunt their land, they would find that a lot of them are like my 16-year-old daughter and myself. We are honest, responsible hunters that are willing to do more than just hunt. We will also help the landowner for the right to hunt.
