GOP leaders block governor’s health care plan

? Republican budget writers today blocked a major part of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ health care reform plan.

“We don’t feel there is enough detail,” Rep. Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita, and vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee, said.

Republicans on the committee passed a resolution disapproving of Sebelius’ executive order to restructure health care programs for low-income Kansans.

Sebelius has said the change is needed to better handle escalating health care costs and to more efficiently deliver services.

Sebelius said she was “disappointed” in the resolution adopted by Republicans.

“The Legislature should not play political games with Kansans’ health care,” Sebelius said.

Landwehr said there are many parts of Sebelius’ executive order that she agrees with. Landwehr said she expects lawmakers to continue working on the proposal.

But, for now, Landwehr said, the executive order prompted too many questions.

Sebelius said she and her staff have gone out of their way to meet with Republicans on the issue.

“I don’t know of any questions that haven’t been answered,” she said.
