Family history

To the editor:

I have just finished reading the article on St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church. There is a problem with the information stated by Professor Bill Tuttle. He states that my great-grandparents, David and Rebecca Harvey, were associated with the church. That is not true. They were Baptists. Their son, Edward Harvey, was buried from St. Luke because one of his daughters-in-law was a member of the church.

Dorothy Singleton married Dean Harvey and she was the AME. She was “raised AME” at Trinity AME in Kansas City, Kan. Dorothy moved her membership to St. Luke after her marriage. My father placed his membership at St. Luke so we could all attend as a family. The other Harvey children who lived in Lawrence belonged to Ninth Street Baptist Church. My mother, Dorothy, and sister, Karen, are still members at St. Luke AME.

Debra Harvey Green,
