Immediate volunteer needs

Women’s Transitional Care Services, a Lawrence-based agency serving battered women and their children with shelter and support since 1978, is offering an information session for people interested in learning about becoming a volunteer. Volunteers are essential to the program and provide peer counseling, support group and children’s activities, community education and other projects. The information session will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Haskell University’s Minoka Hall. Preregistration is not required. For more information, contact Shay O’Brien, volunteer program director, at 865-3956.

  • The Salvation Army needs volunteers to assist with its nightly shelter services. Volunteers are needed to assist with preparing and serving hot meals, and can also help check in clients as they arrive to stay in the overnight shelter, particularly during the busy check-in hours from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, call Vivian from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at 843-4188.
  • The Safe Winter Walkways project needs more volunteers from East Lawrence to match to seniors or persons with disabilities in their neighborhoods for snow shoveling. The program still has unmatched seniors awaiting a volunteer match for the remainder of the winter season. Volunteers are asked to shovel a path from the front door to the street and the public sidewalk in front of the person’s home after each snowfall. Volunteers may call 832-3338 to sign up. Safe Winter Walkways is a partnership between the city of Lawrence and the Roger Hill Volunteer Center.
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital is looking for volunteers to make a three- to six-month commitment for three to four hours a week. In the gift shop, customer service volunteers assist shoppers and operate the cash register. A new department in the hospital, the Breast Center, needs volunteers who will greet patients, walk them to radiology for procedures and also do light clerical duties and run errands within the hospital. At LMH South, 23rd Street and Kasold Drive, hospitality volunteers are needed to greet and escort patients in the GI unit. For all volunteer positions, call Allyson Leland in the hospital volunteer office, 840-3141.
