Another ban?

To the editor:

It has come to my attention that Lawrence, a usually tolerable city, decided to show smokers what it is like to be discriminated against. After much debate and thought I decided on what I feel is an appropriate solution to make the new smoking ban equal for all.

I think that we should reintroduce prohibition to Lawrence. Here’s my thought: By being a smoker I cause harm to employees of the places I visit; of course, keep in mind they choose to work there. I may annoy others with my smoke, but, let’s face it, me lighting up doesn’t prohibit me from operating a motor vehicle. It doesn’t upset families’ lives forever, in a matter of seconds. It doesn’t make me loud, belligerent or want to start fights. This short list of reasons brings me to the conclusion that to make this a fair community again, let’s outlaw drinking in bars and restaurants. That’s right, ladies, no more after-work martinis and no more watching the big game with a pitcher for the men.

I feel that’s the only way to solve this dilemma. That or the city of Lawrence could remember that this is a free country where we as citizens are allowed to vote on issues that affect us. A country where our forefathers felt we could be trusted to make our own decisions.

Being over the age of 18, I personally don’t need “Mom and Dad” holding my hand telling me what to and not to do. In the meantime, I’ll be at home enjoying my martini and cigarette. Not spending my money at Lawrence’s local bars and restaurants. Thank goodness for Overland Park, though, when I do get that urge.
