Sunny skies sending temperatures into the 50s

Lawrence is in for some sunny weather for the next two days, with temperatures climbing into the 50s.

“It’ll be a nice afternoon, but a chilly start,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature was 21,with calm winds and clear skies in Lawrence.

“With the sunshine in the afternoon, we’re going to soar today,” Schack said. The temperature was expected to climb to a high of 51 by 4 p.m., she said.

“It looks like a great day to be outside today,” Schack said. “Punxsutawney Phil had it all wrong. It doesn’t seem like winter to me.”

The famous Pennsylvania groundhog went outside Tuesday, Groundhog Day, at Gobler’s Knob and saw his shadow, which, as folklore weather forecasting goes, means six more weeks of winter.

Schack said that overnight, skies will be clear and the temperature will fall to a low of 29 by early Friday morning.

More sunshine is on the way for Friday, with temperatures climbing to a high of 59 by late Friday afternoon, Schack said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 33, with Saturday’s high reaching 56, under partly cloudy skies, she said.
