Dada support

To the editor:

Where does the Journal-World get off opining as it did on Dec. 27 how the mayor’s proclamation of International Dadaism Month “seems to cross the line into foolishness … is disrespectful to the city’s entire proclamation process,” and then go on to suggest, “the time could be better spent”? Isn’t Lawrence the “City of the Arts”? Would there be such a negative attack if the mayor proclaimed an “International Impressionism Month”?

Dadaism is not just an early 20th century movement. Dadaist artists are currently producing thought-provoking works all over the world, including right here in town. Last summer our own Spencer Museum of Art put on a show of surrealist drawings; much surrealist art grew out of Dadaism. So what’s so wrong with the governing body of the City of the Arts celebrating an art movement?

Perhaps the Journal-World editorial staff should run a check on some of its own stories and uses of time. Every night, the World Co.-owned Sunflower 6News includes at least three discussions of the local weather in a half hour.

Foolishness? Time better spent? Sheesh!

Honestly, though, I shouldn’t be so harsh on the Journal-World, because without it there would be less fuel to feed the local Dadaist engine.
